Disney: Deconstruction of Hollywood Studios' big hat begins Jan. 7

by Dewayne Bevil

Removal of the giant sorcerer's hat at Disney's Hollywood Studios will begin next week, Disney World officials confirmed Friday.
Workers will start dismantling the structure, which stands in a prime position in front of the Great Movie Ride, on Jan. 7.  The company had announced its removal in October.
The 122-foot-tall hat, an homage to Mickey Mouse's fashion choices in "Fantasia," has served as the theme park's icon since it was added in 2001. It is stationary and primarily acts as a roof for a souvenir store, a backdrop for street performances and a photo opporunity for guests.
Products from the hat's retail outlet will be moved to a location on the park's Sunset Boulevard.
The company has not said how long it will take for the hat to be completely removed. It is not scheduled to reappear elsewhere on Disney World property.
Disney's Hollywood Studios has had a handful of subtractions in recent months. The hat now will join American Idol Experience, Studio Backlot Tour and the Legend of Jack Sparrow as former attractions at the park, which opened at Disney-MGM Studios in 1989.
