The actress' left hand is severely injured as a result of a car crash at La Brea Avenue and Hollywood Boulevard, authorities report.

Actress Mayim Bialik, who is nominated for an Emmy for her role on The Big Bang Theory, suffered severe injuries to her left hand and thumb Wednesday during a traffic crash in Hollywood.

The collision occurred just before noon on La Brea Avenue at Hollywood Boulevard, said Los Angeles police Officer Karen Rayner.

Bialik, 36, was driving south on La Brea when the driver of a northbound vehicle tried to turn left on Hollywood Boulevard, colliding with the actress' car, Rayner said.

"It was almost a head-on collision," Rayner said.

Rayner said Bialik's injuries were primarily the result of airbags that were deployed in the collision.

The occupants of the other vehicle, identified by the celebrity website TMZ as tourists from Chile, suffered only minor cuts and bruises, Rayner said.

No citations were issued, and no arrests were made, Rayner said.

Shortly after 4 p.m., Bialik posted on her Twitter page that she was "in pain will keep all my fingers," noting that her husband was typing for her. She added that she had taped an appearance on The Soup prior to the crash.

Bialik rose to fame playing the lead role on Blossom, but is nominated for a supporting-actress Emmy this year for her role on CBS' The Big Bang Theory,on which she portrays a neuroscientist. The role is a touch of irony for Bialik, who has a doctorate in neuroscience.
